Booking

This flight was the second leg of Boston – Hong Kong flight with the stopover in Tokyo.

See the review of Boston – Tokyo flight here.

We used 65,000 Alaska Airlines miles per person to book these flights. Alaska Airlines allows a stopover on award bookings. Booking Boston to Tokyo and then Tokyo to Hong Kong flights, both in business class, was only 5,000 miles more than booking just Boston to Tokyo flight, so this was a great deal.

The best part about using the Alaska Airlines miles is that you can purchase them at a discount, so the cost of these business class flights ended up being almost the same price as an economy class ticket paid for out-of-pocket. See our detailed post on how we were able to do it here.

Lounge

Sakura Lounge in Haneda airport is very bright and spacious. It offered plenty of choices for a quick breakfast before the flight.

Unfortunately, we did not have a lot of time to enjoy the lounge as security and immigration took longer than expected.

Seat

Japan Airlines Sky Suite III is everything you expect the business class seat to be: comfy, functional, with plenty of storage. We didn’t get a chance to test the lie-flat position since it was a mid-day flight.
Seat instructions below describe the seat features better than I could:

This flight was the first (and only, as of right now) flight I and Bunky sat separately. I wanted to have a window seat, so we could see landing in Hong Kong that I thought would be a pretty cool experience (and it was – see the review video below). Since business class in Japan Airlines Boeing 777-200 has 1-2-1 layout, seating separately was the only option.
Bunky was hesitant at first, but between amazing window views, and tons of kid-friendly entertainment options, she forgot about my existence within the first ten minutes of the flight.

Food

There were two lunch options: Japanese and Western.

As I am an adventurous eater, the Japanese menu was an obvious choice. I couldn’t always tell what exactly I was eating, but this did not prevent me from enjoying my meal.

The kid’s meal was absolutely adorable, not that it would entice Bunky to actually eat it. She ate only anything she could identify. Good thing she ate a big breakfast at the lounge.

Final Thoughts

Another great flight on Japan Airlines: amazing service, interesting food options, enough entertainment options. Five hours flew by very quick. I could get used to this business class thing…

My only regret is not watching A Banana? At This Time of Night? I hope it is still available  next time we are traveling to/from Japan.
